The City of Mississauga’s Designated Heritage Property Grant provides matching financial assistance to owners of designated heritage properties to conserve and preserve significant built heritage resources. Eligible property owners can receive up to $25,000, or 50% of eligible project costs, whichever is less, for approved conservation, restoration and structural repair work.

About the Designated Heritage Property Grant

The grant supports the conservation, reconstruction and restoration of heritage properties in Mississauga. The program prioritizes work that protects significant heritage elements and maintains the architectural and structural integrity of designated properties. Funding is intended primarily for conservation and preservation rather than general property improvements. Grant Amount and Matching Requirement

Property owners can receive:

- Maximum grant: $25,000

- Maximum funding rate: 50% of eligible project costs

- Minimum grant: $500

- Owner contribution: At least 50% of eligible project costs

The owner’s contribution must be demonstrated through invoices. The annual grant budget is determined by Mississauga City Council, so the amount of funding available may vary from year to year. What Work Is Eligible? The grant can support conservation and restoration work involving significant architectural and structural elements.

Eligible work may include:

- Conservation or replacement of original roofing. - Conservation or replacement of original siding. - Masonry conservation. - Conservation or replacement of windows. - Porch and veranda conservation or restoration. - Bargeboard conservation. - Gutters, eavestroughs and downspouts. - Conservation of designated interior architectural attributes. - Structural repairs. - Foundation rehabilitation. - Column and footing rehabilitation. - Mitigation of insect infestations affecting wooden structural members. - Restoration or repair of chimneys. - Restoration or repair of original wood-shingle or slate roofing where supported by appropriate documentation. Projects that conserve and protect significant heritage elements are given priority. Heritage Conservation Priorities The program places greater emphasis on preserving existing heritage fabric than on replacing or altering heritage features.

Applicants should therefore demonstrate:

- Why the heritage element is significant. - What condition it is currently in. - Why conservation or restoration work is necessary. - How the proposed work will preserve the property’s heritage character. - How the proposed methods are appropriate for the designated property. Historical photographs, studies, plans and other supporting documentation can help establish the heritage value and proposed conservation approach. Who Is Eligible? Eligible applicants are owners of properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

This includes:

- Individually designated heritage properties. - Properties located within heritage conservation districts where the relevant designation by-law has been adopted by Council and registered.

Properties must comply with:

- The Ontario Heritage Act. - Applicable City of Mississauga bylaws. - Other relevant municipal requirements. Applicants must also have no outstanding taxes or other money owing to the City. Who Is Not Eligible? The following properties are not eligible: - Properties owned by the City of Mississauga. - Properties owned by Regional, Provincial or Federal governments. - Properties currently receiving other City grants. - Properties that do not meet the applicable heritage designation requirements. Owners are limited to one grant per calendar year. Work that has already been completed before an application is submitted is not eligible. What Supporting Documents Are Required? Applicants must provide documentation demonstrating the need, scope and cost of the proposed work.

Required or relevant materials include:

- Completed grant application form. - Detailed project description. - At least two itemized cost estimates. - Recent exterior photographs. - Photographs of the areas where work is proposed. - Relevant historical photographs. - Plans, studies or other heritage documentation. - Project timeline. An Engineer Condition Assessment is required when the proposed project involves structural repairs. How to Apply Applications are submitted through the City of Mississauga’s Grants Portal.

Applicants should follow these steps:

Step 1: Confirm Heritage Eligibility

Verify that the property is appropriately designated under the Ontario Heritage Act and that the designation by-law has been adopted and registered.

Step 2: Identify the Heritage Work

Clearly identify the architectural or structural elements requiring conservation, restoration or repair.

Step 3: Obtain Cost Estimates

Obtain at least two itemized estimates for the proposed work. The estimates should clearly distinguish eligible project costs from other expenses.

Step 4: Gather Heritage Documentation

Collect recent photographs, historical images, plans, studies and other evidence that demonstrates the property’s heritage significance and supports the proposed work.

Step 5: Obtain an Engineer Condition Assessment

If structural repairs are proposed, obtain the required Engineer Condition Assessment before submitting the application.

Step 6: Submit the Application

Submit the completed application and supporting documents through the City’s Grants Portal during the applicable application period. Applications are reviewed in three periods between February and September. Funding is approved on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available funding. Project Completion and Payment Approved projects must normally be completed by October 31, 2026. An eligible one-year extension may be available where delays result from permitting or approval processes. After completing the project, applicants must: - Complete the approved work. - Arrange for the required inspection. - Submit final invoices
