About the Chevening Scholarship

The Chevening Scholarship is an international postgraduate scholarship programme designed to help promising professionals study in the United Kingdom and develop the skills, knowledge and networks needed to create positive change in their home countries. Long-term contribution to the applicant’s country of award. Successful scholars are expected to use their UK education and professional experience to contribute to their home country after completing the scholarship. Who Is Eligible? Applicants must meet the programme’s citizenship, education, work experience and return requirements. Citizenship and Residency Requirements

Applicants must:

Be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. Where applying through an ODA-eligible country award, be resident in an ODA-eligible country. Demonstrate a clear intention to support their country of award. Applicants living in a European overseas territory may apply through the relevant Chevening scheme for the European country of which they are citizens. Return-to-Country Requirement Successful applicants must commit to returning to their home country or country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship. This requirement reflects Chevening’s focus on developing leaders who can apply their knowledge and experience to contribute to their countries. Work Experience Requirement Applicants must have at least two years of work experience acquired after completing their undergraduate degree. This is equivalent to a minimum of 2,800 hours of work experience. The programme therefore targets applicants who have already developed professional experience and can demonstrate leadership potential. Academic Requirements Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for admission to a UK master’s programme. The undergraduate degree must have been completed at least two years before the Chevening application deadline. The degree certificate does not necessarily need to be available by the application deadline. However, applicants must have their certificate available by the time of the interview. UK University Course Requirement Applicants must apply to three different eligible UK master’s courses. They must subsequently obtain an unconditional offer from at least one of their selected courses by the deadline specified in the Chevening application timeline. Applicants should therefore research eligible courses carefully and ensure that their academic background meets each university’s admission requirements. Who Is Not Eligible? Certain applicants are excluded from the Chevening Scholarship. British or Dual British Citizens People who hold British citizenship or dual British citizenship are generally not eligible.

Exceptions apply to:

Citizens of a British Overseas Territory. Individuals holding British National (Overseas) status who are applying from Hong Kong. Refugees in Ineligible Countries Applicants who hold refugee status in a country that is not eligible for Chevening cannot apply. However, citizens of a Chevening-eligible country who hold refugee status in another eligible country may remain eligible. UK Residents Applicants who are resident in the UK at the time of application are generally ineligible. An exception applies to residents of the British Overseas Territories. UK Government and British Council Employment Restrictions Certain current and former employees are not eligible.

This includes:

Employees of a UK government department. Immediate relatives of such employees. Employees of the British Council. Immediate relatives of British Council employees. Employees of partner UK universities. Immediate relatives of employees of partner UK universities. Former employees within the specified two-year period. Employees of wholly owned subsidiaries of the relevant organisations. Individuals contracted to work on British Council programmes or projects. Their relevant relatives. Applicants should carefully review the current eligibility rules to determine whether their employment history creates a conflict. Previous UK Government-Funded Scholarships Applicants who have previously studied in the UK through a UK government-funded scholarship are generally not eligible for Chevening. There is an exception for individuals who previously received UK Government funding through a Chevening Fellowship. Such applicants may apply for a Chevening Scholarship once five years have passed since completing their fellowship. Can Someone With a Previous Master’s Degree Apply? Yes. Having already obtained a master’s degree does not automatically prevent an applicant from applying for another master’s degree in the UK. The applicant must still meet all other Chevening eligibility requirements and demonstrate a suitable academic and professional rationale for the proposed course. How the Chevening Application Works Applicants should follow a structured process when preparing their application.

Step 1: Check Country Eligibility

Confirm that your citizenship and, where applicable, residency meet the requirements for a Chevening award.

Step 2: Check Professional Experience

Confirm that you have at least 2,800 hours of qualifying work experience acquired after completing your undergraduate degree.

Step 3: Confirm Academic Eligibility

Ensure that your undergraduate degree qualifies you for a UK master’s programme and was completed at least two years before the application deadline.

Step 4: Select Three UK Courses

Research eligible master’s programmes and apply to three different eligible UK university courses.

Step 5: Obt
