Call for Applications: Solutions and Data Journalism Training (Nigeria)

HumAngle is inviting journalists based in Benue and Plateau states, Nigeria, to apply for a two-day training focused on verification, data journalism, conflict-sensitive reporting, and solutions journalism. The program aims to strengthen journalists’ ability to counter misinformation and disinformation while promoting accurate, responsible, and peace-focused reporting in Nigeria’s Middlebelt region. The training is part of the Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace in Nigeria’s Middlebelt project, implemented by HumAngle in collaboration with Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) and supported by the Canadian High Commission through the Canada Fund for Local Initiative. Selected participants will receive logistical support within their state and will be expected to participate in follow-up virtual sessions and produce at least one data-informed solutions story. What Is the HumAngle Journalism Training? The HumAngle training is a capacity-building opportunity for journalists working in Benue and Plateau states. The program focuses on improving journalists’ ability to report on conflict and other sensitive issues accurately while identifying and countering misinformation that can contribute to violence and social tensions. The training will combine practical learning with continued engagement after the two-day workshop.

About the Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace Project

The training forms part of the Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace in Nigeria’s Middlebelt project. The initiative is being implemented by HumAngle in collaboration with Journalists for Human Rights and supported by the Canadian High Commission through the Canada Fund for Local Initiative. The project responds to challenges facing communities in Benue and Plateau states, where cycles of violence, displacement, misinformation, and disinformation can make accurate public information particularly important. Why the Training Is Important Conflict-affected communities can be especially vulnerable to misinformation and disinformation. False or unverified information can increase fear, deepen divisions, and potentially contribute to further tensions. Journalists working in these environments therefore need specialized skills to: - Verify information before publication - Analyze data accurately - Avoid amplifying harmful narratives - Report on conflict sensitively - Highlight constructive responses to community challenges - Provide audiences with reliable information The training is designed to strengthen these skills through practical learning and expert guidance. Key Training Areas Verification Participants will learn practical approaches for verifying information before using it in journalistic reporting. Verification skills are particularly important when journalists are working with rapidly changing information, social media claims, eyewitness accounts, photographs, videos, and other potentially unreliable sources. Data Journalism The program will introduce participants to data-informed reporting approaches. Data journalism can help journalists identify patterns, provide evidence for claims, and present complex conflict-related issues in a clearer and more factual manner.

Participants will be expected to apply these methods in their own reporting

Conflict-Sensitive Reporting Conflict-sensitive journalism requires journalists to report accurately without unnecessarily increasing tensions or exposing vulnerable communities to additional harm. The training will help participants strengthen their ability to: - Understand conflict contexts - Verify sensitive information - Use responsible language - Avoid harmful generalizations - Consider the potential impact of reporting - Maintain journalistic accuracy and fairness Solutions Journalism

Rather than focusing exclusively on problems and violence, solutions reporting examines credible responses to social challenges and provides evidence about what is being done to address them. Participants will be expected to produce at least one data-informed solution story as part of the program. Who Can Apply? The training is specifically intended for journalists working in Benue or Plateau State.

Applicants must:

- Be resident in Benue or Plateau State. - Be working as journalists in the relevant state. - Commit to attending the two-day training in September 2026. - Participate in all required virtual sessions. - Be willing to produce at least one data-informed solutions story. The opportunity is therefore intended for practicing journalists who can apply the training directly to their reporting. Women Journalists Are Encouraged to Apply Women journalists are strongly encouraged to apply. The program seeks participation from journalists with diverse experiences and perspectives, particularly those actively reporting on communities and issues affected by conflict and misinformation. Training Format The program combines in-person and virtual engagement.
