Background

Access to safe and reliable drinking water remains a critical challenge in several habitations of Harahua Block in Varanasi District, Uttar Pradesh. Although the Government of India, through the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), is expanding piped water supply, many marginalized settlements continue to face inadequate access to potable water due to limited household connections, inadequate storage infrastructure, and uneven water distribution. Women, children, elderly people, and socially vulnerable households are disproportionately affected, often spending considerable time and effort collecting drinking water from distant or unreliable sources. During peak summer months and periods of high demand, the availability of safe drinking water becomes even more constrained. To address this challenge, installation of Ferrocement Tank Towers (Jal Minar) connected with the existing water supply system and equipped with community stand posts is proposed. Ferrocement technology offers a durable, cost-effective, low-maintenance, and climate-resilient solution for decentralized drinking water storage and distribution.

Project Goal:

To improve equitable and sustainable access to safe drinking water for underserved communities in Harahua Block through the installation of Ferrocement Tank Towers (Jal Minar) with community stand posts.

Objectives

- Improve access to safe drinking water for underserved households. - Reduce the distance and time spent collecting drinking water. - Strengthen community-level drinking water infrastructure. - Improve water security during supply interruptions and peak demand periods. - Promote equitable access for women, children, elderly persons, and vulnerable communities. - Support the objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission by strengthening last-mile service delivery. Proposed Intervention The project proposes installation of Ferrocement Tank Towers (Jal Minar) at strategic community locations connected to the existing drinking water supply network.

Each Jal Minar will include:

- Ferrocement elevated storage tank - RCC/steel supporting tower (as per design) - Inlet and outlet pipeline - Community stand posts with multiple taps - Drainage arrangement - Platform for safe water collection - Water quality signage - Provision for future maintenance The locations will be finalized in consultation with: - Gram Panchayat - Village Water & Sanitation Committee (VWSC) - Gram Pradhan - Community representatives

Technical proposal as per the BOQ and 2- Financial proposal in non-editable PDF Format.
