About the Enterprise Fellowship Scheme

The Enterprise Fellowship Scheme is an entrepreneurial talent development programme designed for commercially minded academics and researchers. The programme helps researchers move beyond academic discovery by developing the skills, networks and commercial knowledge needed to transform research into practical products, services or businesses. The scheme aims to increase the public benefit of research and innovation by supporting opportunities that can: Other approved international development opportunities. Fellowship Duration The Enterprise Fellowship normally lasts for 12 months. Part-time participation may also be possible upon request, subject to the scheme’s requirements and approval. The fellowship period is designed to give researchers dedicated time to develop their commercial opportunity while building the entrepreneurial skills required to take the venture forward. Who Is Eligible? The Enterprise Fellowship is aimed at postdoctoral researchers with a research, technology or innovation-based opportunity that has genuine commercial potential.

Applicants must:

Be postdoctoral researchers. Have a developed research, technology or innovation opportunity. Have the necessary access to the relevant intellectual property. Be employed by, or have arrangements for employment with, an eligible UK higher education Host Institution. Remain based within the eligible Host Institution for the duration of the fellowship. Researchers who are already operating a business can also be eligible, provided they are formally based within a recognised Host Institution. Intellectual Property Requirement Access to the relevant intellectual property (IP) is an important eligibility consideration. Applicants should have the necessary rights, permissions or institutional arrangements to use and commercialise the research, technology or innovation underlying their proposed venture. Before applying, researchers should therefore establish: Who owns the relevant intellectual property. Whether the Host Institution has commercialisation rights. Whether additional permissions are required. Whether the proposed venture can legally use and develop the technology or research. Whether appropriate institutional agreements are already in place. Why the Enterprise Fellowship Matters Academic research can produce discoveries with significant commercial and societal potential, but researchers may lack experience in entrepreneurship, market development and business creation. The Enterprise Fellowship helps address this gap by giving researchers dedicated time and resources to explore commercialisation. The programme can help Fellows develop capabilities in: How could the opportunity generate sustainable value?

Step 3: Confirm Intellectual Property Access

Establish that the applicant and Host Institution have the appropriate rights to develop and commercialise the underlying research or technology.

Step 4: Secure Host Institution Arrangements

Applicants must be employed by, or have suitable employment arrangements with, an eligible UK higher education Host Institution for the fellowship period.

Step 5: Develop the Venture Plan

The proposal should explain how the fellowship will help move the opportunity from research or technology development toward commercial viability. This should include clear development objectives and realistic milestones.

Step 6: Plan Development Activities

Identify the training, business support and professional development required to strengthen the venture. Where relevant, applicants can also consider international training, collaboration or placement opportunities.

Step 7: Submit the Fellowship Application

Applicants should provide the required information and demonstrate both the commercial potential of the opportunity and their ability to develop it into a viable venture. What Makes a Strong Application? A competitive Enterprise Fellowship proposal should demonstrate a clear connection between the underlying research and a potential commercial opportunity.

Applicants should focus on:

A well-defined problem or market need. Strong evidence supporting the commercial opportunity. A credible route from research to application. Clear intellectual property arrangements. Realistic commercialisation objectives. A strong personal motivation to develop entrepreneurial skills. Appropriate business and professional development activities. Measurable objectives for the 12-month fellowship. Tips for Applicants Researchers should avoid treating the fellowship simply as additional research funding. Instead, the proposal should show how the fellowship will help translate research into practical and commercial outcomes.

Useful preparation steps include:

Clearly define the customer or end user. Identify the market opportunity. Explain the competitive advantage of the technology or innovation. Confirm IP ownership and access early. Identify gaps in your commercial knowledge. Select training and business support that directly address those gaps. Establish realistic milestones for the fellowship year. Explain how the venture could continue after the fellowship. Use the Host Institution’s commercialisation and technology-transfer resources where appropriate. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applicants should avoid:

Presenting an opportunity with no clear commercial application. Failing to explain the market or customer need. Ignoring intellectual property ownership. Treating the fellowship as a conventional academic research award. Providing vague commercialisation objectives. Requesting development activities w
