What Is the Chevening Scholarship? The Chevening Scholarship is a UK-funded international scholarship programme designed to support future leaders through postgraduate education, professional development and international networking. The programme enables successful scholars to study a master’s degree at an eligible UK university while developing academic, professional and leadership skills. A key requirement is that scholars return to their country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship. Chevening is intended for applicants who can demonstrate: Leadership potential. Professional experience. Academic ability. A clear commitment to their country of award. The potential to create positive change. An interest in contributing to shared UK and international priorities. What Does the Scholarship Support? The Chevening Scholarship provides financial support for eligible scholars undertaking a master’s degree in the UK. Long-term contributions to the scholar’s country of award. Applicants should check the current official Chevening funding terms for the precise benefits available in their application cycle. Who Is Eligible? Applicants must meet several core eligibility requirements. Citizenship and Residency Applicants must be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. For applicants applying for an award from an ODA-eligible country, additional residency requirements may apply. They must be resident in an ODA-eligible country, although that country does not necessarily have to be their country of citizenship. Applicants must also demonstrate a clear intention to support their country of award. People living in a European overseas territory may apply through the relevant Chevening award scheme for the European country of which they are citizens. Work Experience Requirement Applicants must have at least two years of work experience acquired after completing their undergraduate degree. This is equivalent to at least 2,800 hours of work experience. Eligible experience should meet the programme’s current requirements and may include different forms of professional or voluntary activity recognized by Chevening. Applicants should carefully document their experience when completing the application. Academic Requirements Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for entry to a UK master’s programme. The undergraduate programme must have been completed at least two years before the Chevening application deadline. The degree certificate does not necessarily need to have been received by the application deadline. However, the certificate must be available by the time of the interview. UK University Course Requirement Applicants must apply to three different eligible UK master’s courses. The selected courses must meet Chevening’s eligibility requirements. Applicants must receive an unconditional offer from at least one selected course by the deadline specified in the Chevening application timeline. This means applicants should begin researching suitable UK master’s programmes early rather than waiting until after submitting their scholarship application. Return-to-Country Requirement Successful scholars must commit to returning to their country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship. This requirement reflects the programme’s emphasis on developing professionals who can use their UK education and international experience to contribute to their home countries. Applicants should therefore be able to explain how their education, professional experience and future plans can contribute to their country of award. Who Is Not Eligible? Certain individuals cannot apply for a Chevening Scholarship.

Applicants may be ineligible if they:

Hold British or dual British citizenship, except where specific Chevening exceptions apply. Hold refugee status in a country that is not eligible for Chevening. Are resident in the UK at the time of application, except residents of the British Overseas Territories. Fall within the programme’s restrictions relating to employment with specified UK government departments or organizations. Are immediate relatives of individuals covered by those employment restrictions. Have previously studied in the UK through a UK government-funded scholarship, subject to limited exceptions. British or Dual Citizenship Restrictions Individuals who hold British citizenship or dual British citizenship are generally not eligible. Exceptions apply to certain applicants, including: Citizens of a British Overseas Territory. Individuals holding British National (Overseas) status who are applying from Hong Kong, where applicable under the programme rules. Applicants should verify their specific circumstances against the current Chevening eligibility requirements. Refugee Status Restrictions Individuals holding refugee status in a country that is not eligible for Chevening are generally ineligible. However, a citizen of an eligible country who holds refugee status in another eligible country may be eligible to apply. The key consideration is the relationship between the applicant’s citizenship, residency and the Chevening award for which they are applying. UK Residency Restrictions Applicants who are resident in the UK at the time of application are generally not eligible. The exception applies to individuals residing in the British Overseas Territories, subject to the applicable programme rules.
