The Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge (UCIC) supports youth-led climate innovations addressing environmental and climate challenges across Uganda. The national platform focuses on renewable energy, circular economy solutions, regenerative agriculture, forestry, biodiversity conservation, and other climate-related innovations. The challenge is designed to identify promising youth-led initiatives and help them grow through incubation, mentorship, entrepreneurship development, and business support. It also promotes the use of technology, creative arts, storytelling, digital media, and indigenous knowledge to encourage climate action and sustainable behavior. Ugandan citizens and eligible residents aged 18 to 30 can apply, including youth leaders, climate startups, university students, researchers, women entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities, community innovators, farmer organizations, artists, storytellers, technology developers, and social enterprises. What Is the Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge? The Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge (UCIC) is a national platform created to strengthen Uganda’s climate innovation ecosystem. The program supports young people developing practical solutions to environmental and climate challenges. It brings together innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, creativity, and sustainable development to help build a more resilient and low-carbon future for Uganda. UCIC focuses on identifying promising youth-led ideas and helping them move toward stronger, scalable, and investment-ready climate enterprises.

Objectives of the Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge

The challenge has several key objectives:

- Identify promising youth-led climate innovations across Uganda. - Accelerate solutions addressing environmental and climate challenges. - Support innovation in renewable energy, circular economy, regenerative agriculture, forestry, and biodiversity conservation. - Strengthen the entrepreneurial and business skills of young innovators. - Provide incubation, mentorship, and business development support. - Help promising climate enterprises become scalable and investment-ready. - Promote climate action through creative arts, storytelling, and digital media. - Integrate indigenous knowledge into climate solutions. - Encourage sustainable behaviors and greater climate awareness. - Build collaboration among innovators, investors, government, academia, and the private sector. Climate Innovation Areas Supported UCIC covers a broad range of climate and environmental innovation areas. Renewable Energy Young innovators developing clean and renewable energy solutions can use the challenge as a platform to develop and scale their ideas. Innovations may focus on improving access to clean energy, energy efficiency, or technologies that contribute to a low-carbon economy. Circular Economy The challenge supports innovations that promote more sustainable use of resources. Circular economy solutions can help reduce waste, encourage reuse and recycling, improve resource efficiency, and create new economic opportunities from materials that would otherwise become waste. Regenerative Agriculture UCIC recognizes the importance of climate-smart and regenerative approaches to agriculture. Youth-led innovations can contribute to more sustainable farming systems, improved soil and ecosystem health, efficient resource use, and greater resilience among farming communities. Forestry Forestry-related innovations are another priority area. Projects can contribute to sustainable forest management, restoration, climate resilience, livelihoods, and other approaches that strengthen the role of forests in addressing environmental challenges. Biodiversity Conservation The challenge also supports youth-led solutions that help protect biodiversity and ecosystems. Innovations can combine technology, community participation, entrepreneurship, and local knowledge to address threats to biodiversity and promote sustainable ecosystem management. Entrepreneurship and Business Development Support UCIC is not limited to identifying innovative ideas. It also aims to help young innovators develop viable climate enterprises. Selected innovators can benefit from support focused on: - Incubation - Mentorship - Entrepreneurship development - Business support - Enterprise development - Scaling climate solutions - Investment readiness This approach can help young innovators move from an early-stage concept or project toward a more structured and sustainable enterprise. Promoting Creativity and Climate Action Climate innovation is not limited to technology. UCIC also encourages young people to use creative arts, storytelling, and digital media to communicate climate issues and encourage sustainable behaviors. Creative approaches can make complex environmental challenges easier for communities and wider audiences to understand while encouraging participation in climate action. Indigenous Knowledge and Local Solutions The challenge recognizes the potential contribution of indigenous knowledge to climate action. Local communities often have knowledge and practices related to agriculture, natural resource management, biodiversity, adaptation, and sustainable livelihoods. Combining indigenous knowledge with modern technology, entrepreneurship, research, and innovation can help create solutions that are more relevant to local communities. Who Can Apply? The Uganda Climate Innovation Challenge is open to Ugandan citizens or eligible residents aged 18–30.
