What Does the Chevening Scholarship Support? The scholarship is designed around postgraduate education and leadership development in the United Kingdom. Successful applicants undertake an eligible UK master’s programme and become part of an international network of Chevening scholars and alumni. The programme particularly values applicants who can demonstrate: Leadership and influence. Strong professional experience. Clear career objectives. Academic ability. Commitment to their country of award. Potential to contribute to positive change. Interest in issues of shared importance between the UK and participating countries. Who Is Eligible? Applicants must meet the core Chevening eligibility requirements. Citizenship and Residency

Applicants must:

Be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. Meet the relevant residency requirements for their country or award category. Applicants from ODA-eligible countries must generally be resident in an ODA-eligible country. Applicants must demonstrate a clear intention to support their country of award. Applicants living in a European overseas territory may apply through the relevant Chevening scheme associated with the European country of which they are citizens. Work Experience Requirement Applicants must have at least two years of work experience after completing their undergraduate degree. This is equivalent to at least 2,800 hours of work experience. Eligible experience may be assessed according to Chevening’s applicable work-experience rules and can include relevant professional activities. Applicants should ensure that their work history clearly demonstrates professional development, responsibility and leadership potential. Academic Requirements Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for admission to a UK master’s programme. The undergraduate degree must have been completed at least two years before the Chevening application deadline. Applicants may still apply if they have not received their final degree certificate at the time of application, provided the required certificate is available by the interview stage. UK University Application Requirement Candidates must apply to three different eligible UK master’s courses. The selected courses should be appropriate to the applicant’s academic background and career goals. Applicants must subsequently obtain an unconditional offer from at least one selected course by the deadline specified in the Chevening application timeline. This means applicants should begin researching UK universities and master’s programmes well before the relevant offer deadline. Return-to-Country Requirement A major condition of the Chevening Scholarship is the commitment to return to the applicant’s home country or country of award. Successful scholars must commit to returning for at least two years after completing the scholarship. This requirement reflects the programme’s objective of developing leaders who can apply their knowledge, skills and international experience to challenges in their countries of award. Who Is Not Eligible? Certain categories of applicants are excluded from the Chevening Scholarship.

Applicants may be ineligible if they:

Hold British citizenship or dual British citizenship, subject to specific exceptions. Hold refugee status in a country that is not Chevening-eligible. Are resident in the UK at the time of application, except under applicable British Overseas Territory provisions. Are current employees, or certain relatives of employees, of specified UK government-related organisations or partner institutions. Have recently been employees of specified organisations within the applicable exclusion period. Are contracted to work on certain British Council programmes or projects, including applicable relatives. Have previously studied in the UK through a UK government-funded scholarship, subject to Chevening’s exceptions. British or Dual Citizenship People holding British or dual British citizenship are generally not eligible. Exceptions apply to certain applicants, including: Citizens of a British Overseas Territory. Individuals holding British National (Overseas) status who are applying from Hong Kong, subject to the applicable rules. Refugee Status Applicants holding refugee status in a country that is not eligible for Chevening are generally not eligible. However, citizens of an eligible country who hold refugee status in another eligible country may remain eligible, subject to the programme’s requirements. UK Residency Individuals resident in the UK when they apply are generally not eligible, except for applicable residents of British Overseas Territories. Previous UK Government Scholarships Applicants who have previously studied in the UK through a UK government-funded scholarship are generally not eligible. There is an exception for individuals who previously received UK Government funding through a Chevening Fellowship. Such applicants may become eligible to apply for a Chevening Scholarship once five
