Rammeavtalen gjelder oppdrag om å etablere overvåkingspunkter av bevaringsforholdene for kulturlag fra middelalder gjennom fortløpende logging av utvalgte parametere. Noen oppdrag er MOV nivå 2, som kun innebærer uttak og analyse av prøver. Ofte vil prøver fra profil, utgravning eller borepunkt tas ut av arkeolog også leveres til analyse. Andre oppdrag er MOV nivå 3, dvs både prøveuttak, analyse og installering av miljøovervåkingsutstyr på utvalgte lokaliteter i og utenfor de norske middelalderbyene. Bevaringstilstanden (MOV nivå 1) dokumenteres av NIKU samtidig som det tas ut prøver til analyse og eventuelt utstyr monteres av leverandøren.
