Den 24,5 km lange Lærdalstunnelen på E16 mellom Aurland og Lærdal i Vestland fylke skal oppgraderes. Tunnelen oppfyller ikke alle krav i Tunnelsikkerhetsforskriften, og krava til elsikkerhet har endra seg siden tunnelen blei åpnet i år 2000. Det er omfattende tiltak som må gjennomføres for at tunnelen skal oppfylle dagens standardkrav. Det skal sprenges for nye havarilommer, snunisjer og nye tekniske bygg for ca. hver km. 28 nye tekniske bygg skal på plass, to av disse ute i dagen. I tillegg skal det sprenges en ny ventilasjonstunnel ved siden av den gamle. De gamle sjaktventilatorene som står i et tverrslag skal byttes ut, og det skal installeres to nye. Alt av teknisk utstyr skal skiftes ut og oppgraderes til å oppfylle dagens standard. Kabelføringer for nytt teknisk anlegg skal legges bak ny føringskant i betong. Eksisterende anlegg skal være i drift i hele anleggsperioden, og når det nye anlegget er testa og godkjent, skal det gamle kobles fra. Det skal gjøres mindre utbedringstiltak på dreneringsanlegget i tunnelen, alle kummer skal utstyres med dykker, og det skal bygges nytt sedimenteringsanlegg for vaskevann på begge sider av tunnelen.
