The Aral Sea Wetlands Innovation Challenge is seeking pilot-ready solutions to restore degraded landscapes and promote sustainable land management in Uzbekistan’s Amudarya and Muynak districts. Up to four winners may receive prizes of up to USD 10,000 each, with solutions expected to demonstrate measurable environmental results and potential for wider replication. Aral Sea Wetlands Innovation Challenge – Overview The challenge is part of a broader environmental initiative led by the Government of Uzbekistan, implemented with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The initiative focuses on restoring ecosystems and improving the resilience of communities in the Lower Amu Darya and Aral Sea region, where environmental degradation has significantly affected land productivity, biodiversity, water resources, and livelihoods. The Innovation Challenge specifically seeks practical and field-ready technologies, approaches, and innovations that can be tested in eligible degraded areas and generate evidence for future scaling. What Is the Aral Sea Wetlands Innovation Challenge? The Aral Sea Wetlands Innovation Challenge is an innovation competition for organizations and enterprises developing solutions for land degradation, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management. The challenge moves beyond research and conceptual ideas. Applicants are expected to propose solutions that are sufficiently developed to be piloted in real-world conditions. Successful solutions should demonstrate the ability to: Produce evidence that can support future replication and scaling. Why the Aral Sea Region Needs Innovative Solutions The Aral Sea region has experienced extensive environmental degradation over several decades. In the target landscape, land degradation is associated with several interconnected problems.

Key challenges include:

Increasing soil salinity. Declining soil fertility. Loss of natural vegetation. Wind erosion. Reduced land productivity. Ecosystem degradation. Biodiversity loss. Increasing pressure on local livelihoods. These challenges affect both the environment and communities that depend on natural resources and productive land. Previous assessments under the wider project have identified land degradation neutrality priorities and sustainable land management recommendations. The Innovation Challenge seeks to turn these recommendations into practical interventions that can be tested and measured on the ground. Where Can Projects Be Implemented? The challenge focuses specifically on eligible degraded landscapes in: Amudarya District, Uzbekistan Muynak District, Uzbekistan Proposed innovations should have a clear connection to the environmental and land-management challenges in these target areas. Solutions intended for implementation outside the eligible geographic areas may not meet the challenge requirements. What Types of Innovations Are Expected? The competition is intended for pilot-ready innovations, rather than ideas that are still at the earliest conceptual stage. The strongest proposals should explain how the innovation will be tested, what environmental problem it addresses, how results will be measured, and how the approach could eventually be replicated at a larger scale. Grant and Prize Amount The Innovation Challenge has an estimated total prize pool of USD 40,000. Up to four prizes may be awarded.
