Nell'ambito della realizzazione di una nuova rete di teleriscaldamento nel Comune di Lugano, è prevista la costruzione della centrale di teleriscaldamento Gemmo, dotata di pompe di calore destinate a coprire circa l'80% del fabbisogno termico della rete. La sorgente termica delle pompe di calore è costituita dai serbatoi dell'acqua potabile adiacenti alla centrale. Poiché non è possibile utilizzare direttamente l'acqua potabile come fluido di alimentazione delle pompe di calore, il trasferimento del calore avviene mediante un circuito intermedio che utilizza CO2 come fluido termovettore sul lato evaporatore.
