NVE har ansvaret for overvåking og kartlegging av ustabile fjellpartier i Norge.I dag er det 10 ustabile fjellpartier med høy risiko som kontinuerlig overvåkes av NVE.  De vanligste målemetodene er GPS og totalstasjon, bakkebasert radarsystem samt laser og strekkstag. I tillegg brukes forskjellige kamerasystemer samt kommunikasjon via radio. Installasjonene er ofte plassert utilgjengelig til, med egendefinerte strømforsyninger ut fra behov. Mange av disse strømforsyningene er hybridløsninger med batterier, solceller, vindmøller og metanol brenselceller. Disse blir designet ut fra strømbehov, tilgjengelighet, solinnstråling osv. pr i dag har NVE ca. 35 enheter i drift, men antallet varierer ut fra behovet. NVE ønsker nå inngå rammeavtale på leveranser av metanol brenselcelleenheter med tilbehør (metanol og fuelmanager).
