Details

Faba bean is one of Australia’s major pulse crops and an important export commodity, with premium food markets placing strong emphasis on visual grain quality. Seed coat colour stability and seed size uniformity are key determinants of grain classification, market acceptance and price, yet deterioration in seed appearance during storage and handling can increase the risk of quality downgrades and reduce grower returns. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, digital phenotyping, genomics and molecular breeding provide new opportunities to accelerate genetic improvement of these traits. This investment will develop the knowledge, genetic resources and breeding tools required to improve seed coat colour stability and seed size uniformity in Australian faba bean, including identification of valuable genetic variation, development of high throughput phenotyping and imaging technologies, molecular marker discovery and delivery of breeder ready germplasm to Australian breeding programs. Ultimately, this investment will provide the tools and germplasm required to accelerate breeding for improved visual grain quality, helping maintain access to premium markets, reduce quality downgrades and strengthen the long-term competitiveness and value of the Australian faba bean industry.
