The MWP Emerging Women Journalists Fellowship, launched by Migrant Women Press, supports women from migrant and adversely racialised backgrounds in Scotland who are interested in developing careers in journalism, media or communications. The professional development programme combines journalism training, one-to-one mentoring, editorial support, publication opportunities, networking and industry experience. Each Fellow will receive a £600 stipend to support participation in the programme. Fellows will also have the opportunity to develop an original feature story for publication and complete an industry placement with a media organization or communications team.

About the MWP Emerging Women Journalists Fellowship

The MWP Emerging Women Journalists Fellowship is designed to help women from migrant and adversely racialised backgrounds build skills, confidence and professional networks within the journalism and media industries. The programme combines practical learning with direct industry exposure and individual mentoring.

The Fellowship is particularly focused on helping emerging journalists gain practical experience and develop connections within Scotland’s media and communications sector. Fellowship Stipend

Each successful Fellow will receive:

£600 The stipend is intended to support participation in the Fellowship programme. This financial support is provided alongside the training, mentoring, publication and industry experience offered through the programme. Journalism and Media Training Fellows will receive professional training led by experienced journalists and media professionals. Training covers a range of practical and professional journalism skills, including: - Journalism writing and reporting. - Fact-checking. - Investigative journalism. - Multimedia storytelling. - Media law. - Journalism ethics. - Artificial intelligence in journalism. The training is designed to help participants strengthen both their core journalism skills and their understanding of contemporary media practices. Writing and Reporting

Participants will develop their ability to write and report stories effectively

The training can help emerging journalists understand how to identify, research and present stories for audiences while developing professional journalism techniques. Fact-Checking and Investigative Journalism The Fellowship also covers fact-checking and investigative journalism. These skills are important for producing accurate, credible and responsible journalism. Participants can develop their understanding of research, verification and investigative approaches as part of their professional development. Multimedia Storytelling Modern journalism increasingly uses multiple forms of media to communicate stories. The Fellowship includes multimedia storytelling training, allowing participants to develop skills relevant to contemporary journalism and digital media environments. Media Law and Ethics Fellows will also learn about media law and ethics. Understanding legal and ethical responsibilities is an important part of professional journalism and helps emerging journalists approach reporting responsibly. AI in Journalism The programme includes training on the use of artificial intelligence in journalism. This provides Fellows with an opportunity to explore how AI is being used within contemporary journalism and media practice. One-to-One Mentoring Each Fellow will receive one-to-one mentoring. Individual mentoring provides participants with dedicated guidance as they develop their journalism skills and career goals. Mentoring can also help Fellows identify areas for professional development and make better use of the opportunities available through the programme. Editorial Support and Publication Fellows will receive editorial support to develop an original feature story for publication. This gives participants practical experience of developing a piece of journalism with professional editorial guidance. The Fellowship also provides an opportunity for participants to have their work published in the programme’s print magazine. Industry Placement A key component of the Fellowship is an industry placement. Fellows will have the opportunity to gain practical experience with: - A media organization, or - A communications team. The placement is intended to give emerging journalists exposure to professional working environments and help them understand how journalism and communications operate in practice. Professional Networking The programme provides opportunities for Fellows to build professional networks. Networking can help participants connect with: - Journalists. - Media professionals. - Communications professionals. - Other emerging journalists. - Organizations within the media sector. Building these relationships can be particularly valuable for participants beginning their journalism careers. Community Building In addition to professional development, the Fellowship includes community-building activities. These activities provide Fellows with opportunities to connect with other participants and develop a supportive peer network. Final Event in Glasgow The programme culminates in a final event in Glasgow. The event provides an opportunity to bring the Fellowship community together and conclude the programme. Who Can Apply? Applicants must:
