The Grant for Research Communication in Artistic Research from the Swedish Research Council supports individual researchers who want to communicate artistic research with audiences outside academia. Grants range from SEK 200,000 to SEK 1 million, depending on project duration, and support activities that promote dialogue, engagement, and co-creation between artistic researchers and wider society. What Is the Grant for Research Communication in Artistic Research? The grant is designed to strengthen communication and public engagement around artistic research. It supports researchers who want to share research-based artistic knowledge with groups outside universities and other academic environments. The programme encourages communication activities that: Make artistic research more accessible. Connect researchers with non-academic audiences. Encourage dialogue between researchers and communities. Communication of research findings through artistic methods. The emphasis is not simply on presenting research to the public. Applicants should demonstrate meaningful engagement with identified non-academic groups. Who Is Eligible? The grant is intended for individual researchers with a high level of research competence in an artistic field. Applicants must meet specific previous-funding and affiliation requirements.
An eligible applicant must:
Be an individual researcher working in an artistic research field. Be a current or former recipient of a Swedish Research Council grant. Have had the availability period of the relevant previous grant end on or after 31 December 2023. Link the proposed communication activity to a previous or ongoing grant or project. Be affiliated with a Swedish higher education institution or another approved Swedish organization. Can Other Researchers Participate? Yes. Up to six participating researchers, including the main applicant, may be included in an application.
The participating group may include:
Researchers. Doctoral students. Individuals with equivalent research competence. However, the application is centered on the eligible individual researcher who meets the Swedish Research Council’s requirements. What Is the Connection to a Previous Grant? The proposed communication project cannot be completely separate from the applicant’s research history. The application must be linked to a previous or ongoing Swedish Research Council-funded grant or project. Applicants should therefore clearly explain: Which research project the communication activity relates to. What research knowledge will be communicated. Why the selected audience is relevant. How the proposed activity extends the reach or impact of the research. Why This Grant Matters Artistic research often produces knowledge through creative practices, experimentation, performance, design, visual expression, and other artistic methods. However, this knowledge can remain largely within academic or specialist environments. The grant helps researchers build stronger connections between artistic research and wider society.
It can contribute to:
Greater public understanding of artistic research. New relationships between researchers and communities. More inclusive research communication. Collaborative knowledge creation. Stronger societal engagement with artistic research. Broader dissemination of research-based artistic knowledge. How to Apply
1. Identify the Relevant Research Project
Start by identifying the previous or ongoing Swedish Research Council grant or project to which the communication activity will be linked. Clearly establish the connection between the research and the proposed communication work.
2. Define the Target Group
Identify the specific group or groups outside academia that you want to engage. Avoid describing the audience simply as “the general public.” Instead, explain who the participants are and why they are relevant to the research.
3. Develop the Communication Activity
Describe what you will do to communicate the research and how the target group will participate. Explain whether the approach involves dialogue, collaboration, experimentation, co-creation, or other forms of engagement.
4. Explain the Research Connection
Show how the activity communicates knowledge generated through artistic research. The proposal should make the relationship between the research and communication activity easy to understand.
5. Select the Project Duration
Choose the appropriate funding category:
6–12 months: SEK 200,000–SEK 500,000.
13–24 months: SEK 400,000–SEK 1,000,000.
The duration should correspond to the complexity and scope of the proposed activity.
6. Identify Participating Researchers
If additional researchers are included, describe their roles and relevant expertise. A maximum of six participating researchers may be included.
7. Prepare the Application
Provide the required information about:
The artistic research. Previous or ongoing research funding. Target audiences. Communication objectives. Planned activities. Engagement and co-creation methods. Project duration. Expected outcomes. Researcher roles. Budget. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applicants should avoid:
Proposing activities unrelated to artistic research. Failing to link the project to an eligible previous or ongoing grant. Treating communication as simple one-way dissemination. Describing the audience too broadly. Failing to explain how non-academic groups will participate. Providing insufficient detail about dialogue or co-creation. Requesting an inappropriate amount for the proposed duration. Including researchers who do not have clearly defined roles. Overlooking the Swedish affiliation requirement. Applying without meeting the previous Swedish Research Council funding requirement. Tips for a Strong Application A strong proposal should clearly connect artistic research, target audiences, communication methods, and societal engagement.
Applicants should:
Define a specific non-academic target group. Explain why that
