Bei Eisenbahntunneln gemäß der EBA-Ril-Tunnel (Zwei-Röhrenprinzip) ist es im Ereignisfall (z.B. Brand) vorgesehen, dass Einsatzfahrzeuge der Fremdrettungskräfte in die andere, nicht vom Ereignis betroffene Röhre einfahren. Die Fahrzeuge verfügen nahezu ausschließlich über einen Antrieb per Dieselmotor, welcher bei Betrieb entsprechende Emissionen verursacht (Abgase). Im Gegensatz zu Straßentunneln sind in elektrifizierten Eisenbahntunneln keine Systeme zur Abgasabführung vorgesehen. Im Rahmen von Planfeststellungsvorhaben (Beteiligung als Träger öffentlicher Belange) kommt es daher seitens der Fremdrettungskräfte zu Einwänden, dass ein dauerhafter Betrieb von Diesel-Einsatzfahrzeugen im Tunnel auf Grund der Dieselmotoremissionen (DME) nicht möglich sei und die Abgase einen Aufenthalt von Einsatzkräften in der Tunnelröhre auf Dauer verhindern. Gleichwohl bestehen in Bahntunneln üblicherweise natürliche Luftströme, die entsprechende Abgase abführen könnten. Es fehlen derzeit auch Ergebnisse/Erkenntnisse im Allgemeinen zu Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten und deren Auswirkungen auf Luftschadstoffbelastungen in Tunneln in Abhängigkeiten verschiedener Geometrien von Eisenbahntunneln.
