Der Auftrag soll eine fundierte Basis für energiepolitische Entscheidungen liefern. Hierfür soll zum einen analysiert werden, welche Entwicklungen in einschlägigen Klimaneutralitätsszenarien unter Beachtung der hierfür erforderlichen Ressourcen (z.B. Finanzmittel, Fachkräfte, Flächen, Rohstoffe, technische Komponenten) eine besondere Herausforderung darstellen. Zum anderen sollen Trendszenarien modelliert werden, welche die Entwicklung des Energiesystems entlang erreichbarer Pfade in die Zukunft fortschreiben.
