Accelerating Agricultural Innovations 2.0 (AAI 2.0) supports research and extension projects that develop, adapt, demonstrate, and accelerate the adoption of innovative agricultural technologies, practices, and management approaches in Alberta. Delivered by Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR) in partnership with the Alberta Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the programme focuses on producer-led research that improves agricultural competitiveness, profitability, productivity, resilience, and innovation adoption. The AAI 2.0 Program is part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year initiative supporting Canada’s agriculture, agri-food, and agri-products sectors. The programme is designed to make strategic investments in agricultural research and knowledge transfer that deliver practical benefits to Alberta’s producers and agricultural value chains. AAI 2.0 supports both research projects and research extension projects. Proposed activities should demonstrate a clear pathway from innovation or research to measurable benefits and adoption within Alberta’s agriculture sector. What Does AAI 2.0 Support? The programme supports projects that address practical agricultural challenges and opportunities through innovation, research, demonstration, and extension.
Eligible projects may focus on:
Developing new agricultural innovations. Testing innovative technologies and practices. Demonstrating the feasibility of new agricultural approaches. Adapting existing technologies to Alberta-specific conditions. Advancing innovations already proven in other regions or industries. Demonstrating new agricultural management practices. Accelerating producer adoption of research-based innovations. Extending research results to producers and value-chain partners. Improving agricultural productivity and profitability. Strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of Alberta agriculture. Research Projects Research projects should focus on developing, adapting, testing, or demonstrating innovations that can provide practical benefits to Alberta’s agriculture sector.
Projects should clearly explain:
The agricultural problem or opportunity being addressed. The proposed innovation or management practice. Why the approach is relevant to Alberta. How the research will demonstrate feasibility or effectiveness. Applicants should demonstrate that they have the expertise, capacity, partnerships, and resources required to successfully deliver the proposed project. Project Completion Deadlines Applicants should plan their projects according to the applicable project category.
Research projects: Must be completed by December 31, 2027.
Research extension projects: Must be completed by September 30, 2027.
The proposed activities, budget, milestones, and extension strategy should be realistic within the relevant completion period. Key Application Requirements AAI 2.0 proposals should demonstrate a strong connection between the proposed research or extension activity and measurable benefits for Alberta’s agriculture sector. Explain how project findings, technologies, or management practices will reach producers and other intended users.
The extension plan should identify:
Target audiences. Knowledge-transfer activities. Demonstration methods. Communication channels. Expected adoption outcomes.
Step 6: Develop the Financial and Economic Case
Provide a realistic project budget and explain the expected economic value of the proposed innovation. Show how the project could generate measurable benefits for producers or the broader agricultural value chain.
Step 7: Demonstrate Adoption Potential
Explain how the proposed innovation can move beyond research or demonstration into practical agricultural use. Strong applications should show a credible pathway to measurable adoption or impact within the project period.
Step 8: Submit Through ARGO
Complete the application and upload the required information through RDAR’s ARGO grant management system before the applicable deadline. Why This Program Matters Agricultural innovation can help producers respond to changing production conditions, economic pressures, environmental challenges, and evolving market demands. AAI 2.0 provides a pathway for research and innovation to move from development and testing toward practical agricultural adoption. The programme can help Alberta’s agriculture sector: Applicants can improve their proposals by focusing on measurable outcomes and practical agricultural benefits.
Define the problem clearly: Avoid describing a broad agricultural issue without identifying the specific challenge the project will address.
Show producer demand: Demonstrate that the proposed innovation responds to a genuine industry or producer need.
Explain Alberta relevance: If an innovation has been developed elsewhere, explain how it will be adapted to Alberta’s conditions.
Include measurable outcomes: Identify specific indicators for productivity, profitability, adoption, or other expected impacts.
Strengthen industry engagement: Clearly describe producer and industry participation.
Develop a practical extension plan: Explain how research results will reach producers.
Provide realistic economic analysis: Demonstrate the potential financial value of the innovation.
Connect the budget to activities: Each major expense should support a clearly identified project activity.
Plan for adoption: Explain what will happen after testing or demonstration and how producers can use the results.
Common Mistakes to Avoid Applicants should avoid weaknesses that can make a research or extension proposal less competitive. Failing to demonstrate a clear producer benefit. Providing insufficient evidence of industry engagement. Focusing heavily on research without explaining adoption. Using an unclear or unrealistic extension strategy. Failing to distinguish between research and research extension activities. Providing weak financial or economic just
