Skoleåret 2027-2028 gjennomfører Udir et forsøk med et nytt valgfritt programfag på utdanningsprogram for studiespesialisering for elever på vg3. Faget ‘forskningslære med fordypningsoppgave’ (heretter FF) har som hovedformål å forberede elevene på videre studier. Faget har innhold og ferdigheter som ikke nødvendigvis er dekket i andre fag, men som er særskilt relevante for høyere utdanning. Eksempler på slikt innhold er: metodekunnskap, grunnleggende vitenskapsteori, forskningsetikk og etisk og hensiktsmessig bruk av kunstig intelligens. Hver elev skal i tillegg levere en fordypningsoppgave med en problemstilling knyttet til elevens andre programfag på vg3. Fordypningsoppgaven er skriftlig og skal vurderes av faglærer og en annen lærer. Fordypningsoppgaven, med etterfølgende oppgavesamtale, skal utgjøre hovedgrunnlaget for standpunktvurderingen, selv om annet vurderingsarbeid også skal inngå i vurderingsgrunnlaget. Det finnes ikke læremidler utarbeidet spesielt til dette faget.
