Background

The targeted informal settlements in Karachi and Peshawar face significant deficiencies in water supply, sewerage, drainage, roads, educational facilities and safe, inclusive public spaces. Existing infrastructure is frequently deteriorated, undersized or poorly maintained, limiting reliable access to basic services and affecting public health, safety, mobility and community well-being. To address these challenges, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is implementing a series of infrastructure and basic service improvement projects. These interventions were identified and prioritized by the target communities through a participatory settlement planning process, during which communities developed Strategic Settlement Plans (SSPs) to comprehensively address their development needs and challenges. …
