Terms of Reference (ToR): Communications Consultant
Title: Communications Consultancy for Changemakers
Duration: September 14, 2026 – January 31, 2027
Reports to: Kristina Preiksaityte – Global Programme Manager for NEST
Overview Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic, international non-governmental organisation. NP works with people affected by violence to enhance their security and dignity through Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP). NP works to reduce and prevent violence, protect civilians in countries affected by violent conflict and its aftermath, and help transform the world’s response to conflict situations. Consultancy Summary The Changemakers initiative is designed to identify and support leaders in protection, peacebuilding, and safety across diverse conflict contexts, equipping communities and organisations with the tools to integrate UCP strategies into their work and create opportunities for meaningful connection and collaboration. The initiative offers two key opportunities: 1) participation in a dedicated, external facing Foundational Training on UCP (UFT), scheduled to take place in November in Nairobi, Kenya, and 2) development and mentorship of a UCP-inspired initiative or project funded by a micro-grant. The Changemakers Communications Coordinator provides general assistance in the implementation of media and communication-related activities. This includes driving the preparation of communication products such as success stories, human interest pieces, project briefs, social media content and visibility materials that highlight outcomes and lessons learned from the Changemakers programme.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications Strategy - Prepare a communications plan and develop audio-visual and written communications outputs including for social media for the Changemakers programme in collaboration with the Global Programme Manager for NEST and the UCP Academy Manager, - Act as the communications focal point for the Changemakers cohort informing each participant of expected communication outputs. - Work with the broader NP communications team to link Changemakers communications outputs to NP’s broader programme of work. Communications Content - Provide on-site communications leadership and develop external outputs with participants in Nairobi, Kenya in November 2026 - During the UFT, document impact through photography, film and other content collection - Interview Changemakers to capture and communicate their individual and collective stories to increase the visibility of the Changemakers programme and showcase its outcomes. - Develop and publish human-interest stories, blogs, social media posts, talking points and other communication materials that highlight the Changemakers programme. - Obtain informed consent from Changemakers prior to documentation, via signed consent forms for in-depth interviews. - Adhere to NP’s Image Use and Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Policies at all times. Communications Support & Design - Upon request, design information materials such as, flyers, posters, one-pagers, etc. – on the Changemakers programme. - Support reporting design: help with turning programme data and updates into clear, well-designed reporting products – e.g., infographics, fact sheets, one-pagers, etc. - Work directly with the Global Programme Manager for NEST, the UCP Academy Manager, and the Events & Logistics Assistant to scope, draft, lay out, translate (French/Arabic/English), and finalise each product so it is accurate, accessible, and appropriate for intended audience. - Produce print- and digital-ready files, manage versions and sign-off, and deliver on the timelines the programme requires.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following skills, attributes and experience: - Postgraduate degree and/or equivalent professional experience in communications or related fields. - At least four years professional experience, including at least two years working on humanitarian communications or related work. - Fluency in both written and spoken English is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- French and/or Arabic language abilities are an asset. - Background in emergency humanitarian communications methodologies and best practices is a plus. - This position requires operational flexibility to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. - Strong, demonstrable videography and video-editing expertise. Must have own professional equipment. - Strong photography and photo-editing capabilities. Must have own professional equipment. - Skilled in creative video editing techniques (montages, cuts, sound syncing, lower-third captions) to produce content optimized for a variety of digital channels. - A keen eye for impactful, compelling storytelling in sensitive and dynamic humanitarian contexts. - Able to communicate effectively and build relationships with colleagues and partners. - Solid understanding of communications ethics best practices when operating in vulnerable situations with communities in crisis. - Highly creative, innovative, and enterprising; able to drive projects independently. Duration This consultancy agreement takes effect as of September 14, 2026, and ends on January 31, 2027. Reporting and Supervision The consultant will work under the supervision of the Global Programme Manager for NEST during the Changemakers programme.
