The I Tatti/Museo Nacional del Prado Joint Fellowship Program invites applications from early- and mid-career art history scholars for a residential research opportunity in Madrid and Florence. The fellowship supports research on the Italian Renaissance and encourages projects exploring its transnational connections, including dialogues with Latin America. Fellows will spend the fall term in Madrid from mid-September to mid-December 2027 and the spring term in Florence from January to June 2028, gaining access to the research resources and academic communities of both institutions.

About the I Tatti/Museo Nacional del Prado Joint Fellowship Program

The joint fellowship is designed to advance scholarship on the Italian Renaissance and its wider transnational dimensions. The program supports interdisciplinary research covering areas such as: - Art and architecture. - History. - Literature. - Material culture. - Music. - Philosophy. - Religion. - Science. Projects that consider connections and exchanges between Renaissance Europe and Latin America are particularly encouraged, reflecting the global reach and continuing influence of Renaissance studies. Fellowship Residency The fellowship is divided between two major cultural and research institutions. Madrid Residency Fellows will spend the fall term in Madrid from mid-September to mid-December 2027. The Madrid residency is supported by the American Friends of the Prado Museum and provides fellows with access to the resources and collections of the Museo Nacional del Prado. Florence Residency Fellows will spend the spring term in Florence from January to June 2028. During this period, fellows will have access to the resources of I Tatti, including the Biblioteca Berenson, as well as opportunities to participate in its academic life. Fellows are expected to reside in the respective cities during their assigned terms and actively participate in the academic communities of both institutions. Research Resources and Academic Opportunities The fellowship provides scholars with access to extensive research resources in both Madrid and Florence. At the Museo Nacional del Prado, fellows can draw on: - The Study Center. - Library resources. - Museum collections. - Research and academic activities. At I Tatti, fellows will have access to: - The Biblioteca Berenson. - Research resources. - Academic programming. - The institution’s scholarly community. This two-location structure gives researchers an opportunity to develop their work using complementary collections, libraries, and scholarly networks. Fellowship Benefits Fellows will receive financial and housing support during the residential fellowship.

The financial package includes:

- USD 5,000 per month during the fall term in Madrid. - USD 5,200 per month during the spring term in Florence. - A one-time relocation supplement of up to USD 1,800. - When possible, a rent-free apartment. - Alternatively, a housing subsidy may be provided to help offset rental costs. The fellowship is intended to allow scholars to focus on their research without taking on additional professional obligations. Who Can Apply? Applicants must meet the academic and language requirements of the fellowship.

Eligible applicants must:

- Hold a PhD at the time of application. - Not be pursuing a second PhD. - Have a strong background in Italian and/or Spanish and Latin American studies. - Be conversant in English and Spanish. - Have at least a reading knowledge of Italian. The program is intended for early- and mid-career art history scholars whose research fits within the fellowship’s Renaissance-focused scope. Priority for New Institutional Connections Priority is given to applicants who have no previous association with either I Tatti or the Museo Nacional del Prado. Residential Requirement The fellowship is fully residential.

Fellows must:

- Reside in Madrid during the fall term. - Reside in Florence during the spring term. - Participate in the academic life of both institutions. - Devote themselves to their approved research during the fellowship period. The residential structure is an important part of the program and enables fellows to make full use of the research resources and scholarly communities available in both locations. Restrictions During the Fellowship The fellowship cannot be held concurrently with another award. Fellows are also not permitted to take on other obligations during the fellowship period, including: - Teaching positions. - Other substantial professional commitments. - Activities that interfere with the residential and research requirements of the fellowship.
