The Gasworks International Residency 2027 offers an eleven-week, fully funded residency in London for an early-career contemporary visual artist based in Lebanon. Supported by the Saikalis Bay Foundation, the residency is designed to promote professional development, cultural exchange, artistic experimentation, research, and new creative work. The residency will take place at Gasworks in London from 7 April to 22 June 2027. The selected artist will have access to a private studio, accommodation, travel support, living expenses, materials funding, professional networking opportunities, and curatorial and pastoral support.
About the Gasworks Residencies Programme
Gasworks’ international residencies programme brings artists from around the world to London for self-led and process-based residencies. The programme is designed to provide artists with an environment where they can: - Research and develop new work - Experiment with artistic ideas and processes - Engage with London’s cultural and artistic environment - Build international professional networks - Meet artists, curators, and other cultural professionals - Develop their professional practice - Exchange ideas across different cultural contexts Gasworks hosts up to twenty artists each year through its international residency programme. Gasworks Residency for Artists Based in Lebanon This particular open call is specifically for early-career contemporary visual artists currently based in Lebanon. The eleven-week residency will provide the selected artist with an opportunity to immerse themselves in London’s contemporary art scene while independently developing their artistic practice. The residency is not structured around producing a predetermined final project. Instead, it emphasizes research, experimentation, artistic development, and process-based practice. During the residency, the selected artist will be able to use Gasworks’ facilities and participate in professional and cultural activities designed to support their development. What Does the Fully Funded Residency Cover? The selected artist will receive comprehensive financial and practical support throughout the residency.
The award includes:
- A fully accessible private studio at Gasworks - Single-room accommodation in the Residency House - Economy return flights between Lebanon and London - Taxi transfers - All visa costs - Visa application support - A weekly living stipend of £175 - Materials budget of up to £800 - A prepaid travel card providing unlimited travel within central London - Access to basic tools and audiovisual equipment - Administrative support - Pastoral support - Curatorial support This package is intended to remove many of the financial and practical barriers associated with undertaking an international artistic residency. Professional Development Opportunities The residency provides more than studio space. The selected artist will have opportunities to develop professional relationships and gain greater exposure to London’s contemporary art community. Professional development activities include: - Studio visits - Meetings with artists and curators - Networking opportunities - Engagement with London’s cultural sector - Participation in an Open Studio event - Access to Gasworks’ professional network - Curatorial and administrative support These opportunities can help an early-career artist build international connections and gain experience working within a new cultural environment. Open Studio Presentation As part of the residency experience, the selected artist will have the opportunity to present their work through an Open Studio event. This provides a platform for engaging with artists, curators, cultural professionals, and members of the wider public while sharing aspects of their artistic research and development. Who Is Eligible? Eligibility is specifically limited to early-career contemporary visual artists who are currently based in Lebanon.
Applicants must:
- Be an early-career contemporary visual artist - Be currently based in Lebanon - Have at least a moderate level of spoken English - Be able to secure a UK visa - Be able to participate in the full eleven-week residency Visa costs and application support are included as part of the residency, but applicants must be able to obtain the necessary UK visa. Who Is Not Eligible? The residency is intended for individual artists and is not designed to accommodate groups or families.
The following are not eligible:
- Artistic duos - Collectives - Applicants wishing to bring partners - Applicants wishing to bring children These restrictions are related to the accommodation and funding arrangements of the residency. What Type of Artists Can Apply? The opportunity is aimed at contemporary visual artists at an early stage of their professional careers. Artists should be able to demonstrate an established artistic practice and recent work through their application materials. The residency is particularly suited to artists who would benefit from time and space for research, experimentation, artistic development, and engagement with an international contemporary art environment. How to Apply for the Gasworks Residency Applications must be submitted digitally through the online application form on the Gasworks website.
