About the Jean Monnet Fellowships Program

The Jean Monnet Fellowships at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies support experienced scholars who want to undertake advanced research in Florence. Each year, up to 20 fellowships are awarded to researchers who meet the programme’s doctoral eligibility requirement. The programme aims to create a diverse and international community of researchers working on research topics connected to the Centre’s academic priorities. How Long Is the Fellowship? The fellowship lasts for one year, running from September to August. Fellows are required to reside in the Florence area for the entire fellowship period. Residence throughout the fellowship is important because fellows are expected to participate fully in the Centre’s academic activities. Research Requirements Applicants are expected to develop a research proposal that aligns with the Robert Schuman Centre’s main research themes, programmes, and projects. The research undertaken during the fellowship should lead to a publication.

Possible publication outcomes include:

- An EUI Working Paper. - A contribution to a scientific journal. - A contribution to an academic publisher. Applicants should therefore present a clear research proposal demonstrating how their proposed work fits within the Centre’s research environment. How Much Financial Support Is Available? The fellowship provides a basic grant of €2,850 per month. Fellows who receive additional income from other sources may receive a minimum grant of €2,100 per month. Additional financial support is available for eligible family and research-related expenses. Family Allowances Family allowances may be available to fellows who meet the relevant conditions.

The available allowances include:

- Up to €310 per month for a partner living in Florence, subject to income restrictions. - €210 per month for each dependent child. Applicants with accompanying family members should take the applicable conditions and income restrictions into account. Research and Travel Support In addition to the monthly fellowship grant, fellows can receive support for certain research and travel-related expenses.

The programme provides:

- €650 for eligible research expenses. - Reimbursement of travel costs of up to €1,200 for incoming and outgoing trips. - Up to €250 for visa-related expenses. These additional allowances are intended to help fellows manage eligible costs associated with their research stay in Florence. Taxation of the Fellowship The fellowship is not taxed by the Institute. However, fellows remain responsible for complying with any other applicable tax provisions. Applicants should consider their own tax obligations when assessing the financial arrangements associated with the fellowship. Residence Requirements Fellows must reside in the Florence area throughout the fellowship period. The residence requirement allows fellows to participate fully in the academic activities of the Robert Schuman Centre. If a fellow arrives late or leaves before the end of the fellowship, the grant is reduced accordingly. In addition, no grant is paid for August if the fellow leaves before 20 July. Who Can Apply? The fellowship is open to scholars of any nationality. Applicants must have obtained their doctorate before 1 September 2022. This means the programme is intended for experienced scholars whose doctoral degree was obtained more than five years before the start of the fellowship.
