The Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneur Competition is a free global virtual pitch competition that enables high school students to develop original business ideas using Blue Ocean Strategy tools. Students may compete individually or in teams of up to five, submit an English-language video pitch of less than five minutes, and compete for global, regional, and People’s Choice prizes.

About the Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneur Competition

The competition gives high school students practical experience in entrepreneurship, innovation, business strategy, communication, and pitching. Participants learn how to create a “blue ocean business”—a venture designed to develop new market space rather than compete directly within an overcrowded existing market. The virtual format enables eligible students worldwide to participate without travelling to an in-person competition venue. Purpose of the Competition

The competition aims to help students:

- Gain practical entrepreneurship experience - Understand Blue Ocean Strategy - Identify unmet customer needs - Develop original business ideas - Create new market opportunities - Improve communication skills - Learn how to prepare a business pitch - Work independently or collaboratively - Use strategic business tools - Receive feedback from multiple judges - Gain international exposure and recognition What Is a Blue Ocean Business? A blue ocean business creates new demand or market space instead of competing primarily for existing customers. A conventional business may try to outperform rivals on price, features, or quality. A blue ocean business asks whether the industry’s assumptions can be changed to attract people who are not currently customers.

A strong blue ocean concept should:

- Address an unmet or overlooked need - Offer distinctive value - Attract noncustomers - Reduce or eliminate unnecessary industry features - Introduce new benefits - Balance innovation with practical feasibility - Clearly differ from existing competitors Who Is Eligible? High school students from anywhere in the world may participate.

Students can enter:

- Individually - In teams of up to five students

Team members may attend:

- The same high school - Different high schools Every participant must register separately, including every member of a team. Enrollment Requirement

Participants must be enrolled in high school when they register

Students who graduate after registration but before the pitch-submission deadline may still submit their entries. Applicants should confirm their enrollment status before registering and retain any records the organizers may request for verification. Team Requirements Teams may include a maximum of five students.

Every team member must:

- Meet the high school enrollment requirement - Complete registration - Contribute to the competition entry - Follow the competition rules - Be listed accurately in the submission

Teams should agree in advance on:

- Individual roles - Concept ownership - Research responsibilities - Pitch-development tasks - Video production - Communication with the organizers - Distribution of any prize money Mandatory Blue Ocean Mini-Course All participants must complete the online Blue Ocean Mini-Course before submitting a pitch. The course introduces the strategic concepts and tools required for the competition. Students should complete the course early enough to: - Understand Blue Ocean Strategy - Apply the required tools properly - Refine their business idea - Prepare the strategy visuals - Rehearse their pitch - Resolve questions before submission Completing the course without applying its tools effectively may weaken the pitch. Required Blue Ocean Strategy Tools Every pitch must use three required tools: - Strategy Canvas - Three Tiers of Noncustomers - Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid These tools should be integrated into the pitch rather than presented as unrelated diagrams. Strategy Canvas The Strategy Canvas illustrates the existing industry landscape and shows how the proposed venture differs from current alternatives.

Participants should use it to

- Identify major competitive factors - Compare existing businesses or solutions - Show where competitors invest - Demonstrate how the proposed idea changes the value offered - Explain the venture’s distinctive strategic profile The factors selected should be relevant to customers and supported by reasonable research. Three Tiers of Noncustomers The Three Tiers of Noncustomers framework helps students identify people who do not currently purchase or use existing industry offerings.

The three tiers generally include:

- Soon-to-be noncustomers: People who use existing solutions reluctantly and may leave when an alternative becomes available.

- Refusing noncustomers: People who deliberately reject current industry offerings.

- Unexplored noncustomers: People who have not traditionally been considered potential customers by the industry.

Students should explain which noncustomer groups the idea will attract and why. Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid The Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid helps teams design a new value proposition.

Participants should explain which industry factors they will

- Eliminate: Features or practices that no longer create meaningful value

- Reduce: Factors that can be lowered below the usual industry standard

- Raise: Factors that should be improved above the existing standard

- Create: New benefits or experiences the industry has not previously offered

The grid should connect directly with the Strategy Canvas and target noncustomers. Originality Requirement All business ideas must be original.

Participants should

- Develop their own concept - Credit any permitted external sources - Avoid copying existing ventures - Respect intellectual property - Avoid trademark violations - Ensure that images, audio, and other media can be used legally - Accurately describe any existing work or inspiration A concept that violates intellectual p
